Before you get your dog involved in your Halloween celebrations, there are a few things you need to understand. No matter how cute dog clothing is, you should never overdo it. If it is hot out, leave it off, dogs overheat far more quickly than humans do.

Never leave your dog unattended, the safety of the dog comes first before fashion.

Also never force your dog to wear something which is too tight, can constrict their breathing or hamper their movement and sight, make the best of their natural attributes.

If your dog has one eye, make him a pirate, if he has three legs, make him a pirate, if he has a parrot on his shoulder, make him a pirate, pirates and dogs work well together ?

You can find pet Halloween costumes virtually everywhere; in the supermarket, in costume shops, pet stores, fashion houses, Paris Hilton's wardrobe, online stores, the drug store, or in that little box of fabric and bric-a- brac you knew would come in handy one day.

Dog owners... you should all consider your pets’ personalities when deciding on a costume. Dogs with sunny dispositions? Dress them up as a flower. Always watching the neighbors? Dress them up as Sherlock Holmes. Beagle that constantly howls? Sounds like the latest pop singer.  Just get creative and you'll have a great time!

In recent times it has become hugely popular for people to dress their dogs at Halloween, at one time it was only popular for people to dress as dogs at Halloween, but the times, they are a-changin.

Most Dog Halloween Costumes tend to be of the traditional type, devils, cowboys, witches, pumpkins and skeletons. The designer types have gone a bit more over the top with lobsters, frogs, fairies, cats, and even Cary Grants. You name it, you can find it.

If you already have existing costumes from your kids or babies, look at these, you may easily be able to turn them into a dog Halloween costume quite easily, with a minor alteration here and there and a hole cut out for the tail (and rear exit too).

Crafty tailoring can work wonders, and it will be far less expensive.

Simple costumes can also be made out of already existing pet clothing. A doggy raincoat can be turned into a fisherman's sou'wester. A reindeer is easy to make and so is a ghost. In a loose monks cowl type garment, you can turn your pug into the best looking Yoda there is.

Making a ghost costume is a classic for a Dog Halloween Costume, and all you need is an old sheet or piece of white fabric, a pair of scissors to cut out holes for the eyes, nose and ears, a few lengths of elastic, a needle and cotton and one naked dog.

Richard asks…

Halloween costume? You, the kids, the dog- tell me about it.?

Great answers! Have fun!

andre1 answers:

I'm pregnant so I was thinking of painting my belly to look like a basketball or something!! I was going to be a pregnant nun, but I live in Germany and I'm not sure how sensitive they are about stuff like that over here.

James asks…

Have you ever taken your dog out in a costume on Halloween....to go trick or treating? it's ok right?

we don;t have kids and this is our little Otis's first Halloween....he wants to either be a fireman or a ballerina.......should we take him in a stroller or on a leash.....he is a pug......

andre1 answers:

Yes, my friends all had small kids and I didn't, so I dressed my black lab in a great doggie skeleton costume and put a halloween bucket around his neck and we all went together, funny thing, the dog got the most candy! IOt;s fine to dress up your pets for Halloween as long as the outfit is not uncomfortable for the dog, and provided the dog does not mind.
P.S. I think Pugs are the most adorable dogs to dress up! Have fun.

Mark asks…

Halloween Logic Problem Help!!?

Okayy so i have this problem that i cant figure out. Five kids entered a halloween . Using the clues below to try to determine the full name of each child, the costume worn by each and the order in which they placed.

Clues:
1)The troop child did not place 1st
2) bob placed after the Harte child but placed ahead of the skeleton
3) THe smith child and the child dressed as a witch live in the same city
4)the child dressed as a skeleton is not the jones child
5) neither ned (who wasnt dressed as a dog) nor helen is the glass or harte child
6) Ed placed after the child dressed as a witch, but ahead of the jones child
7) the child dressed as a devil (who didnt place 1st) was not bob
8) the child dressed as a bunny (who wasnt the smith child) placed ahead of kate
9)kate glass was the skeleton in 5th

Can you help??

andre1 answers:

At 5th place, dressed as skeleton - Kate Glass

4th place, Bob Jones as a bunny

3rd place was Ed Harte who dressed as a devil

2nd place went to Ned Troop, the witch

Helen Smith, dressed as a dog, took the 1st place

Robert asks…

When I put my 10 month old schnauzer in his cage tonight, should I let him see the costumes?

Or should I keep him where he can't see the kids? I just got a call that my help wouldn't be here tonight, as planned! Since it's his 1st Halloween, I don't want him to be scared. I can't trust him because he can jump the fence in the front yard.

Any advice from the experienced dog owners out there?
I can't control a 40 lb dog & give out candy at the same time.
He's a Standard Schnauzer!

andre1 answers:

If I were you I would keep him indoors but not where people are entering or going out. A Schnauzer is a very excited dog and would love to see kids in costumes, I doubt he would be affraid and more likely would want to play with them. However I would keep him away from the door in case he runs off with some kids who just so happen to exit the house.

I would keep him in the living room or in the kitchen in case he gets too excited about the whole thing. A hyper happy dog is not easy to handle if you are handing out candy. If the evening passes and less and less kids get to the door then I would let him have a sniff and come out but not at heavy traffic

Donald asks…

Parents who have dogs?

Do your dogs have clothes? You know coats, sweaters, halloween costumes and the like?

If you do is it because the kids wanted to? If not, do/would your kids want to?
Zorro- on top form as usual. Was going to say 'hand me the man card', but you're safe!

andre1 answers:

Yeah, he does... But only cause the igloos up here get real chilly at night...

Jk

he has a winter sweater cause it does get nasty cold... And he has little boots cause of all the salt they put on the roads, it hurts his little puppy paws...

I just want to add... My dog, when he wants to go for a walk, will go get his leash, his sweater and his boots... Brings them to you one at a time... So i have a hard time believing that he hates any of them.. Especially the boots, once he tried them and realized it blocked the salt burn he never wants to leave the house in the winter without them

i suppose i could be a who owns a breed that doesnt do well in the canadian winters and expect my little guy to put up with the cold, or i could do my best to ensure that i protect him from the elements seeing as how it was my choice to bring him here, not his

10 Foods Your Dog Should Not Eat: Halloween Candy Can Kill Your Dog

Gothic Lace Vampiress Adult Costume

Humans have both an extreme strength and an extreme weakness when it comes to loving their pets. in particular are known for loving their dogs the same as they do their children. So what's the extreme weakness? It's our lack of good decision making when it comes to our dog's diet and health. Dogs, across the globe, are taken for medical emergency care due to foods we feed them. One of the most dangerous times of the year for our dogs is Halloween because of the candy and other foods we give to our dogs without realizing what harmful affects they can cause to our dog's health.

Taffeta Coffin Vampiress Adult Halloween Costume

Here are 10 foods known to cause dog health problems.

  1. Alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication, coma or even death.
  2. Chocolate, coffee, tea and other foods containing caffeine are toxic and may affect your dog's heart and nervous system.
  3. Fruit pits can become lodged in the digestive system causing obstruction and possibly leading to death.
  4. Grapes and raisins both contain an unidentified toxin that has been proven to cause damage to the kidneys.
  5. Hops, primarily as a flavoring and stability agent when brewing beer, can cause panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures and even death. Hop is also used in other beverages and herbal medicines.
  6. Macadamia nuts contain an unidentified toxin that is known to affect the digestive and nervous systems and cause muscular problems such as weakness and tremors.
  7. Marijuana may depress the dog's nervous system, causing vomiting and changes in their heart rate.
  8. If your dog has an insufficient amount of lactase enzymes, dairy products are more of a risk.
  9. Persimmon seeds have caused intestinal obstruction and enteritis (an inflammation of the small intestine).
  10. Foods or candy sweetened with Xylitol (a substitute for sugar. Used in sugar-free candy, gums and baked goods) can result in low blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.

There are numerous food substances that can be harmful to dogs health such as garlic, raw and cook onions, onion powder, potatoes, rhubarb and even tomato leaves. Raw eggs, raw fish and too much sodium can also lead to canine health problems. It's important to know about these foods and realize the dangers they can have to your puppies health and your dogs health.

Because your dog relies on you to take care of his health needs, you need to know what may or may not harm him. A little education can go a long way towards preventing puppy health problems and adult dog health issues.

So, What Can Your Dog Eat on Halloween?

Pumpkin is actually good for your dog. Many veterinarians and other professional dog handlers recommend putting small amounts in your dog's food. Just keep in mind that moderation is always important to anything we feed ourselves or our dogs.

Great Ideas for Halloween Dog Costumes

Halloween is right around the corner and although you may have already figured out every little detail of your costume, have you considered what your family dog will wear? Halloween dog costumes are gaining in popularity every year and why not? It's fun and exciting to dress your dog up in all types of cute outfits and it doesn't matter what size pet you have. You can find costumes to fit dogs of all shapes and sizes and ones to match his personality, too.

Here are a few great ideas for Halloween dog costumes that can help make your furry friend even cuter than usual:

  • Wear Matching Costumes- This is a very popular idea that many find fun and amusing. If you're going to dress up as a fairy or a princess, you can buy great costumes for your dog to match. There are many options available and even if you don't find something to match perfectly, you should be able to find something that goes with the theme you're creating. By the way, a Pomeranian or other small breed dog makes a wonderful princess. Just make sure you find the most precious crown to sit upon her ears!
  • Choose an Animal or Insect Design- If you would rather your pup have a style all his own, some awesome choices to look into include animal and insect costumes. Some of your options include tigers, bumblebees, ducks, monkeys, frogs, lions, spiders or even a ladybug! Imagine your black lab as a playful monkey, wouldn't that give everyone around a good chuckle and get your pooch some much-appreciated attention?
  • Traditional Costumes- When dressing your dog up as a different animal isn't your thing, you can look for some traditional costumes that never seem to get old. One favorite is to dress your dachshund up as a but don't forget the condiments! Another option is to dress your dog up in a striped prison jumper and hat to show how he's "bad to the bone". The prison costume works great if you have two dogs because you can dress one as a police officer.

Most Halloween dog costumes can be found in sizes to fit any size dog. However, there are a few that are designed especially for small and medium dogs and there may be some just for large dogs. Therefore, you'll need to check the sizes before making your decision. You don't want to plan your Halloween party and find out later they don't make that particular dog costume in the size you need.

Dressing your best friend for Halloween can be more exciting than choosing your own outfit. Consider all of your options and remember to keep your dog comfy in his or her costume. Have fun and experiment with different looks. If you can't decide between two or three different Halloween dog costumes, you can buy them all for future years and plan ahead.

About the author: Check out Doggie Clothesline for a great variety of Halloween dog costumes. Create a Halloween memory for yourself and dress your pet up this year. You will find a number of sizes including styles for small pups plus large dog costumes.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Are clothing and costumes for animals a form of abuse??
I was watching a programme today which showed a pet boutique selling outfits for pooches!!
The clothing ranged from Gangster to Chav and then to beachwear including bikinis................ for Dogs!!
I can just about tolerate a yorkshire terrior having a silly ponytail shoved on it's head but to dress a dog in clothing all day?..............

Is this abuse or just another fashion accessory??

    • ANSWER:
I think its creepy, like chimps in clothes. It creeps me out. The people who own them don't want a dog or a chimp, and don't have any respect for what they are. I don't trust people who do that kind of thing! They must have more money than sense.
I used to put a waterproof coat on my dog to prevent him getting rheumatism. But it wasn't a fashion accessory.

The Dangers Of Over Bathing Your Dog

As people continue to look for ways to reduce household expenses, are opting for do-it-yourself dog grooming. However, some people over do it when bathing their dog. If you have been a for some time then you realize dog's have a certain odor that you no longer seem to notice. When non-dog owners come to visit, they notice it straight away and if your new spouse never had a dog and you do, you could be in for some serious pushback.

In talking with a local groomer, one of their clients that fall in the category of non-dog owner new spouse said they have a standing appointment every two weeks. aThe new spouse just hates the smell even if the dog was outside for only an hour,a she said. While this is quite extreme and frankly something, they will have to get over, it is not unusual for some dog owners to bathe their dog once a month.

Pet Friendly Holidays

Training Holidays

Every knows the heartache of leaving your faithful friend behind when you go away for that well-earned holiday.

We've all driven away from the boarding kennels promising ourselves it's the last time and that in future we'll only go on holidays where the dog can come, too. That's one reason why more and more of us are taking our pets with us when we enjoy a break.

The current economic climate and concerns over the environmental impact of jetting off for far-flung places also mean it's a boom time for the dog friendly holiday market in Britain. And despite the bureaucratic hoops of the Pet Passport Scheme, even those parts of Europe that can be easily reached by car are experiencing an increase in enquiries from dog-owning holiday makers.

But rather like the perennial family holiday problem of "what shall we do with the kids today?", still need to be armed with a few ideas for keeping their pets amused and stimulated when they go away together. Walking holidays are a great way to see the country, top up your fitness levels and keep our four-legged friends interested. But not everybody - and certainly not every dog - wants to spend every single day of a holiday foot-slogging it up hill and down dale.

One alternative is to combine a trip away with your dog with a short training course. You could try almost anything from basic obedience and good behaviour to advanced skills such as agility and stock work. There are plenty of courses on offer, varying in length from a couple of hours to several days. Some are residential courses, where you can stay "on-site" at the training centre. But if not, most parts of Britain boast a range of dog friendly places where you can stay from plush country house hotels to cosy self-catering cottages and welcoming B and Bs.

The Paws For A Walk website carries details of a selection of the many training courses available in Britain and abroad as well as a wide range of accommodation possibilities. So why not combine a well-earned break in wonderful countryside with a bit of canine self-improvement?
