Before you get your dog involved in your Halloween celebrations, there are a few things you need to understand. No matter how cute dog clothing is, you should never overdo it. If it is hot out, leave it off, dogs overheat far more quickly than humans do.

Never leave your dog unattended, the safety of the dog comes first before fashion.

Also never force your dog to wear something which is too tight, can constrict their breathing or hamper their movement and sight, make the best of their natural attributes.

If your dog has one eye, make him a pirate, if he has three legs, make him a pirate, if he has a parrot on his shoulder, make him a pirate, pirates and dogs work well together ?

You can find pet Halloween costumes virtually everywhere; in the supermarket, in costume shops, pet stores, fashion houses, Paris Hilton's wardrobe, online stores, the drug store, or in that little box of fabric and bric-a- brac you knew would come in handy one day.

But... why bother?  Take a look at all the Dog Halloween Costumes available on this page and just try to beat the prices you'll find here.  There are some really great prices and variety of Dog Halloween Costumes on this page.  Enjoy!

Basically if you are going to buy a costume, you have to start with the dog. If you don't have one, you can buy one, but don't ever support puppy mills so use a good breeder, whose premises you are happy with or, adopt from a shelter. There are plenty of potential pirate dogs in shelters looking for good homes. Oh yes, you will need a credit card.

Dog owners... you should all consider your pets’ personalities when deciding on a costume. Dogs with sunny dispositions? Dress them up as a flower. Always watching the neighbors? Dress them up as Sherlock Holmes. Beagle that constantly howls? Sounds like the latest pop singer.  Just get creative and you'll have a great time!

In recent times it has become hugely popular for people to dress their dogs at Halloween, at one time it was only popular for people to dress as dogs at Halloween, but the times, they are a-changin.

Most Dog Halloween Costumes tend to be of the traditional type, devils, cowboys, witches, pumpkins and skeletons. The designer types have gone a bit more over the top with lobsters, frogs, fairies, cats, and even Cary Grants. You name it, you can find it.

If you already have existing costumes from your kids or babies, look at these, you may easily be able to turn them into a dog Halloween costume quite easily, with a minor alteration here and there and a hole cut out for the tail (and rear exit too).

Crafty tailoring can work wonders, and it will be far less expensive.

Simple costumes can also be made out of already existing pet clothing. A doggy raincoat can be turned into a fisherman's sou'wester. A reindeer is easy to make and so is a ghost. In a loose monks cowl type garment, you can turn your pug into the best looking Yoda there is.

Making a ghost costume is a classic for a Dog Halloween Costume, and all you need is an old sheet or piece of white fabric, a pair of scissors to cut out holes for the eyes, nose and ears, a few lengths of elastic, a needle and cotton and one naked dog.

Laura asks…

I want to be a dog for Halloween! Need Help!!?

I'm a 16 year old guy that needs a dog costume by tomorrow for a , any ideas/suggestions that could help me?!?! Thanks.
Also, I'm open for ideas, since I know dressing up as "a dog" is a very broad topic. However, I would much rather not wear a mask.

andre1 answers:

Buy clothes you can glue onto, a cheap long sleeve shirt and pants or a sweatsuit. Cut out felt patches and fabric glue them on. Get a sweatband and glue felt ears onto the sides. Draw a face on with makeup. Make a tail out of felt maybe with some wire in between 2 pieces if you want it to stand out some or bend.

Sandra asks…

Is this a good Halloween idea for a 11 year old?

My 11 year old sis wants to go trick-or-treating with her friend. Her friend would be Dorothy and she would be The Wicked Witch Of The West and they would bring our pet dog as ToTo. Any ideas for the costume?

andre1 answers:

That's a Great costume and it sounds very cute! :D

For Dorothy:
The Light Blue Plaid Dress
Her Hair Braided On Each Side With One Blue Bow On Each Side (the bows can be optional)
Knee High White Socks Or Blue (You Can roll them down or leave them the way they are)
A Picnic Basket (Make sure it's big enough for your pet to fit in or you can just walk the dog around, your decision)
and of course...The Ruby Slippers (red flats with added red glitter on it, or the actual ruby slipper, black flats could work)

For The Wicked Witch:
A Black Witch Hat
A Black Witch Dress
A Broomstick
Green Face Paint and if you want to, a wart
Hair Hair Normal, in a Pony-tail, Bun, or even a black wig
Black shoes (Flats, Boots, anything black will work)

Make is optional for these costumes (But it would look better though in my opinion)
You can find these things in a costume store or any other store close or around Halloween, around your house, and basically anywhere, It's all about your creativity and imagination

Nancy asks…

Matching costumes ideas...Monkey and...?

I just bought my baby a monkey costume for Halloween, and I want to dress up to match...I thought about dressing my 2 wiener dogs as bananas, then i thought maybe me and my husband could be bananas, or he could be the man with the yellow hat...I don't know...any suggestions? My friend's dressing her baby as a lion and she's going to be Dorothy from the ! I wish i had thought of that! I want something like that where our costumes are related...ANY IDEAS?
thanks!
LOL I actually thought about that but my hubby WONT go shirtless! let alone wearing a "skirt/dress" LMAO!!!!!

andre1 answers:

This is a hard one. A banana is the obvious answer, but to get more creative, you might have to tweak your baby's costume a little. The first thought that popped into my head, was to attach little wings to his monkey costume and then you could dress up as the Wicked Witch of the West from Wizard of Oz, with her cute little flying monkey baby.
That might even be a cute idea if you're going with your friend. It could be a group costume! Your husband could be the scarecrow, tinman, or wizard. If you decide to go with this idea, you may want to ask your friend what she thinks about it first.

You could also be an organ grinder with your monkey. Or you could both be pirates with a pet monkey, like Geena Davis in the movie Cutthroat Island.

Hope I helped a little...I'm sure it will be adorable whatever you do. Have fun! :)

Donna asks…

Making a Flavor Flav ?

My dog is going to be Flavor Flav for Halloween this year. Any ideas for her costume?

andre1 answers:

Just make a big clock out of cardboard and put it on some rope around their neck. Maybe some ridiculous sun glasses? But good luck getting them to keep them on for long!

George asks…

First of I am a man in college and what something pretty funny but not cheesy. Preferably something inexpensive that i could create with stuff from a thrift shop.

Chris asks…

What are some cute costume ideas for my dog?

I have 2 boys. One is an America Pit Bull Terrier and the other is a Yorkie, Maltese, Standard Poddle mix. I already know what I'm dressing the APBT up as(he's going to be a Pit in Sheeps Clothing. I already have his costume) the problem is I don't know what to dress the Yorkie as. I was thinking a prisoner since he ABSOLUTELY HAS TO BE CRATED at night. What are some other cute ideas?

FYI: For all the smart asses they are going with the family and since everyone else is dressed up it's only fair that they too get dressed up. They're also going to be at the door when the trick or treaters come early in the night.

One year somebody on my block dressed her dog up as a boat, lol, and it had lots of little people in it. :D

David asks…

lion costume for our dog, where to find? pictures inside...?

ok, we have a 18 months old, male American Pitbull Terrier whose name is Leo:

he is registered to an ADBA APBT club and this month there is going to be a Spookotober Fun Show in which the dogs will be able to compete in their regular conformation classes, fun events and added they are also going to have a costume party and competetion

we want to dress our dog up as a lion =D the name will match too! but we can't find the costume anywhere =/

we saw this:

and would would to be able to find that costume or something similar to it, has anyone seen or know where we can find it?

if not, do you have ideas on how we can make one for him?

thanks so much in advance!

andre1 answers:

Honestly it looks like someone got creative with a yard or so of fake fur and made that themselves.

You'd probably have to measure around your dog's head, and measure around his chest maybe.. Draw out a pattern yourself on some newspaper.

Lizzie asks…

I need to find or make a costume like this one? Do you know where i can buy it? or How to make it?

This is the costume that I want for my dog.

http://www.doobybrain.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/02/dog-lion-mane.jpg

any more ideas?

andre1 answers:

Cheaper way~

Go to your local fabric store and get a yard of fuzzy fabric, yes they have it there. Most stores stock it in dark brown, light brown, orange, black, and white. Just measure how much you need to fit your dog and sew it with a needle and thread. Takes a few minutes. If you want it more elaborate you could cut out holes for the legs with an exacto knife or razor blade. Hope that helps!

Daniel asks…

Please help? How to make a costume?

I'm planning on being a K9 officer this year, but because I want to wear this costume at the zoo, I cannot use a real German Shepherd. I was wondering what style of puppet I could make, and how to make it.

Types of puppeted costumes:
1: Cheetah from Lion King Broadway. In this style, the front legs and head are puppeted, and the back legs are those of the wearer.
2: Zebra from Lion King Broadway. In this style, the head and back legs are puppeted and the front legs are those of the wearer.
3: rider-style. The front legs are those of the wearer, the cops legs are fake. The costume would resemble a cop holding back the police dog.

Which style would work best? Any tips on how to make the dog?

andre1 answers:

The first two costumes were made by people with decades of experience in making puppets and an incredibly large budget. In order for someone without that experience and budget to make a costume of that nature it would take some incredible puppeteering and sewing knowledge, which I am betting you don't possess (that's not intended in a mean way--very few people possess that sort of knowledge).
Your best bet is to go for the third one. I'm sure you can find a pattern online and if you go to a fabric or crafts store, the employees would be more than happy to help you.

Mary asks…

What Disney films do you think should be on stage or would make success? Or maybe come back on stage?

Some of them would be difficult and not right for the stage like The Fox and the Hound, that's better off as a film. It would be so cheesey on stage. Imagine people being dressed up in bad fox costumes and hound costumes! lol
I think Aladdin should be a musical, if they hadn't done it already. The Lion King, The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast already done.Cinderellas already done I think. Peter Pan's already done.
Also from JM barrie's story adaptian. I think 101 Dalmatians wouldn't work that well, well maybe using dogs live but how will they use the ability to talk? The Jungle Book should be done as well, if they know how to do it.
I reckon Sleeping Beauty and could be done, Robin Hood would be too difficult.
What is your opinion?
Who Framed Roger Rabbit would be very good!

andre1 answers:

Trust me if high school musical was on stage the tickets would be sold out pretty fast.i love hsm and I'm 13. Trust me it will be a success.

And if camp rock was on stage will be a success because of the Jonas brothers. Hope i helped.

James asks…

Help with sexy group costume!?

My group of friends and I are going as sexy Wizard of Oz characters. So far we've got Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin man, Lion, and Glenda the good witch. I can't stand to wear a witch hat to make the Wicked Witch of the West. I was thinking about trying to put together a sexy Toto outfit. Any tips or ideas on how in the world to make that little black dog a sexy little thang? Also, ideas about other characters is welcome! Thanks!!

andre1 answers:

This was all I could find http://www.wizardofozcostumes.com/toto.html and it's not exactly cute.

I suggest wearing a cute black top, long sleeve, with black shorts, black tights under the shorts. Get some cute and maybe the nose, but it's not necessary. And a tail.

How To Tell If Your Cat Is Sick

Unfortunately, when your cat is sick, it can't tell you so it's up to you as a pet owner to train yourself to be observant. A good way to keep tabs on your pet's health is to make an informal, physical exam part of your week 00004000 ly cat-care routine. You may actually make it easier for your veterinarian to treat your cat because you will be bringing your pet in to see him or her before an illness has progressed too far.

Outlined below are some basic areas to evaluate in assessing your cat's health.

Eyes, Ears, Nose and Mouth: The eyes of a healthy cat are clear, bright and free of redness or discharge. The nose should be cool and moist, with no secretions. The ears should be clean and dry, with pale pink skin inside and on the external flaps, and there may be a small amount of clear or dark wax in them.

The mouth should have pink gums and lips, and the breath should be free of odor. If your cat's eyes are red, have a cloudy or mucus discharge, are coated with film, or if your cat has an increased sensitivity to light or is squinting, it may have an injury or infection and should be checked over by your veterinarian. A small amount of dried mucus in your cat's eyes is normal, the equivalent of sleep in human eyes. There may be more or less sleep at times because of dust, dirt, smog or other irritants in the air.

If your cat is shaking its head persistently, pulling its ears flat against its head or frantically scratching them, or if its ears have a foul odor, excessive wax or unusual discharge, it may have ear mites or an infection and need medical treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Help for a ?!?!?!?
so i have 2 dogs a boy and girl there poodles and there gonna be in a and i need help deciding what costume to make them. So i was thinking cowboys, bugs, a prince and princess, cops, pirates, bride and groom, a fairy and knight,... so i don't know what else which do you think would be the best?

    • ANSWER:
      bride and grooom

  2. QUESTION:
Remember that crazy van with the dog costume that Jeff Daniels drove in Dumb & Dumber? Guess what?
I could SWEAR I just saw it going down the street in front of my building! It was called, "Proud Puppies Grooming Service" and it had dog ears!

    How cool is THAT? lol

    • ANSWER:
chicks dig it.............its a shaggin wagon

  3. QUESTION:
What are some dog magazines I should buy?
I would like to get a monthly dog magazine...

I am into GSDs and other working/herding dogs, I don't want a magazine full of dog costumes and fun things to do to your dog, I want a magazine that has dog training, grooming, working, and new things that come out for dogs (like new brushes and new toys that seem to occupy their time)...

And what is the monthly price?
I am not looking for an all grooming magazine, I want a magazine with some grooming advice and it shows some of the new brushes and combs... I really want a magazine that has training advice and info on breeds and stuff like that...

    • ANSWER:
Whole Dog Journal has lots of what you want, but won't have much grooming info. They do product reviews, have training articles, discuss different health issues, etc. You can also purchase some individual articles online. Sorry, don't remember what the subscription price is.

Bark! is also a great magazine, also has training and health articles, advertising, etc.

  4. QUESTION:
What products sell best in your grooming shop?
We are thinking about starting a small shop in our dog grooming shop and are wondering what products are the 'hot sellers' in other people's shops. We would definately sell the most commonly asked things: brushes of various kids to work with different coat and skin types, combs, and cologne.

We have tried to sell stuffed toys, tennis balls, rawhide bones and bandanna's with absolutely no success after two years. We are located in a very small town so we need to be able to accomidate the middle class rank. Nothing too frilly or expensive would ever sell. (costumes, custom photography, dog furniture, ect.)

    Any recommendations?

    • ANSWER:
Price-wise, you simply can't compete with the big box stores on most items. Therefore stick with the basics or the unique. Basic grooming supplies - brushes, combs, etc. do well because we recommend them. Same with dental care items and ear care products. Various flea & tick products did well because owners wanted to take care of the problem in one stop rather than go to a big box, too. We sold extra and holiday themed bows and bandanas, and fancy treats, too, mostly as impulse items. We tried to carry items that the big box stores didn't such as breed stationary and notepads, breed magnets, trivets and other gift items. Want to move those toys and rawhides you've had sitting around a while? Try repackaging! For the holidays we'd buy fancy boxes and put together an assortment of treats and toys and sell it as a gift box!

  5. QUESTION:
If it's wrong to dress up a dog then...?
...why is it not wrong to groom a dog & give it fancy hair cuts & put ribbons on hair? "The dog is a dog not a human." I hear this line all the time especially from those who don't believe in dressing up dogs but what I don't understand is, why is fancy grooming allowed then?

Why does the dog need cute hair cuts, or poodle cuts, or Bichon cuts & whatever else when you could just shave the bugger or just simply do it yourself at home & just chop off all the hair without any care. Doesn't matter if there's hair sticking out here & there. Why need to care if it's nice, cute or neat? The dog is a dog. It does not care about how nice or how cute it looks like.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't believe in dressing the dog up all the time because it is absolutely unnecessary. I only dress my dogs up during events, competitions & photoshoots. This is all harmless fun & definitely not cruel or abuse unless the owner dresses the dog up in thick clothes/costumes under the sweltering hot sun. My dogs' costumes never stay on for more than 10 min & they're only dressed in A/C places. Sometimes I put a tee on my Dalmatian when she gets cold. I also put tees on my GRs when they got spayed. Other times they are never dressed.

So can someone tell me why? I don't want to start an argument here. I just want to know a good relevant explanation to this :)

    • ANSWER:
As long as it doesn't affect the dog's movements or physical well-being, such as causing it to overheat etc. then I don't mind people dressing up their dogs.

The problem in my opinion is that many, not all, but many people who do dress up their dogs, keep them as accessories and don't let them be dogs. Admitted, I seldom see a dressed up dog, but of the ones I've seen, I've never seen one be allowed to romp around and roll in the mud and come to think of it, I rarely even see them walking on their own. Usually they are being carried by their owners, either on one arm or in a matching handbag. So I guessed a dressed up dog represents a certain stereo-type, although it may not necessarily be true for that particular dog.

Where can I find a ewok dog costume? Have been looking and only get pictures but no where 2 buy one.?

I think my dog would make a really cute ewok (star wars) for Halloween, I started looking online and found two pictures of a cute ewok dog costume but can't find a site where I can buy one. Can anyone help?

I am guessing the costume on that website was handmade. Looks like they just took a and ripped out the face. You have a couple months, get sewing!

Or, just get a Shih Tzu. They're always wearing an Ewok costume :)

BTW, he'll only fit in the large or extra large costumes (either or). He is BIG (not a small dog),

Halloween costume last minute.Pictures. Judge it, please?

Okay, I didn't think I'd be able to go trick or treating this year (I know, I know, I'm getting too old lol) but turns out I can and it's tomorrow. So my friends and I threw together this quick costume of a female pimp. A few of my other friends are going to be my hookers. I don't have many options, but any ideas please let me know.

Here are a few costume sites I found;

http://www.costumecraze.com/Traditional-Costumes-Halloween-Costumes-Halloween-Costumes-for-Pets.html

http://www.buycostumes.com/CategoryPage/Pets_132.aspx

http://www.google.com/products?hl=en&q=dog+costumes&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=X&oi=product_result_group&resnum=1&ct=title

Also you could do something makeshift if you wanted. Last year my work (dog daycare) had our annual "Dogtoberfest" in which our clients (and newcomers as well) were welcome to participate in games and socializing. I didn't want to spend money on a costume, so I just bought some colored hair-spray (you know, the cheap kind that practically brushes off), and put some sparking white stripes down my black lab's back and VOILA-a skunk! Haha.

Carol asks…

We need a Halloween Theme?

Every year each department in our company dresses up with a theme.

We try to keep the theme inexpensive (costumes under $20 which makes it very hard) yet we also want to win the prize for the most unique theme.

Any ideas?

For instance in the past years we went as tourist to Hawaii and we all dressed up in Hawaiin shirts, shorts, sandels. Some came with snorkeling equipment and surf boards.

Another year we came up with sheets (like bed sheets) with prints on them. Like dogs, horses, bulls(for dog sheet, horse sheet, bull sheet, some sheets had holes in them (holy sheet)...well you get the picture about the sheets.

We also dressed up in very large brown garbage bags which made us look like raisins.

Well....we're out of ideas. Can anyone give us some more ideas to work with?

Thanks!!!!!

Linda asks…

what costume can i make that is simple and easy to do at home?

i need a costume for a camp wacky day.its in 2 days so im kinda limited on supplies. i want it to be unique(not a cat or dog or ninja ect.)it has to be something easy to make or something with simple material(ex-cat:ears,black shirt, black pants, eyeliner whiskers) but, i want it to be unique(not a cat or dog or ninja ect.) i already have two back-up plans in case i cant think of anything else

-buttercup from powerpuff girls
-chinese ninja cat

to help,i have short(above my shoulders)black hair.it can be curly or straight, whatever i need it to be. i am short and kinda on the chubby side but not fat(kinda like a chibi if you know what that is).

I can easily get materials such as shirts or cloth or whatever. i already have cat ears, a mask, a cloak, a top hat, ninja stuff, karate uniform, leis, and stuff from old costumes but i want to be something different.

10 points to the 1st person who gives me a good, easy, simple idea.

(ps:i want it to also be something 2nd graders will recognize.im a counselor not a camper. also,it cant be a fairy or anything with wigs since i deal with kindergarteners.)

ty! <3
oh!if possible a VERY VERY VERY easy, simple pairing would also be appreciated.its okay if you cant think of anything though.

Lisa asks…

What are some UNIQUE/CREATIVE puggle dog ?

I have a Puggle who weighs about 24lbs. I'm entering him in a dog but don't want to purchase the standard everyone-has-it costume from the store. I'm willing to put some time and effort in for DIY costume. Any ideas? I want it to be creative and unique! I am also willing to be in costume if that will help. For example I've seen the dog dressed as a cop and the owner as a prisoner. That was pretty funny. I want to do something way more creative than a standard like that though. Help!
